Walt Disney Studios is reporting that The Avengers took in $80.5 million opening day on Friday, becoming the second highest opening day for a movie behind the $91 million Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 took in last summer.
Avengers' opening day take includes the estimated $18.7 million it took in at midnight screenings. While Avengers didn't break the opening day record set by Deathly Hallows 2, it could break the opening weekend record that Deathly Hallows 2 holds.
Estimates now have Avengers on pace to gross anywhere between $170-$180 million. Deathly Hallows 2 opened with $169 million.
If Avengers does set a new record the next question is for how long? The Dark Knight Rises is poised to be the summer's biggest blockbuster, seeing as The Dark Knight tore up records in 2008, box office observers will be paying close attention to what unfolds.
