Interview with Denis Lenoir the Director of Photography for the Julianne Moore film Still Alice

Still Alice is a heartbreaking and honest portrait of a woman struggling to maintain her identity as she copes with a rare disease. I knew very little about this film when I saw it and recommend you do the same. It's not that this article will go to heavily into spoiler territory but I would hate to lessen the impact of this wonderful film. That much I can tell you, this is a wonderful film. Its playing in limited release right now and opens nation wide in January. If you have the opportunity to see it, do so.  If you have seen the film, I hope this piece will give you some greater insight into both its making and the people who made it. Interview with Director of Photography Denis Lenoir Chris Maynard How are you today? Denis Lenoir  I'm great thank you. Chris Maynard Thank you so much for agreeing to do this. I was struck by the power and beauty of Still Alice and want to talk about that film but would it be ok if we talk about some of your earlier work, if that

The Interview review with video of cast and crew at Christmas day screenings

What's left to say about The Interview? The Sony hack and the Gaurdians of Peace have had more than enough coverage so I won't bother with a retreading of the events that lead to the eventual day and date release of The Interview. Well that's not entirely true the film was released on VOD on Christmas Eve and in theaters on Christmas day. If you want to read about the full story The Hollywood Reporter  has pretty much up to the minute coverage and Drew McWeeny has written a wonderful piece on the consequences of this story over at HitFix . With all the questions surrounding the film one was left out of the conversation, is the film any good? Simple answer, yes. This is a perfectly fine little comedy, nothing about this movie should have created the controversy it did. This is pretty typical for a Rogen/Franco/Goldberg joint, if you like their other films, you will like this one too. Dave Skylark (Franco) and producer Aaron Rapoport (Rogen) run the celebrity tabloid

Val Kilmer 55 today

Val Kilmer was born in Los Angeles, to Gladys (Ekstadt) and Eugene Kilmer, a real estate developer and aerospace equipment distributor. His mother, born in Indiana, was from a Swedish family, and his father was from Texas. Val studied at Hollywood's Professional's School and, in his teens, entered Juilliard's drama program. His professional acting career began on stage, and he still participates in theater; he played Hamlet at the 1988 Colorado Shakespeare Festival. His film debut was in the 1984 spoof Top Secret! (1984), wherein he starred as blond rock idol Nick Rivers. He was in a number of films throughout the 1980s, including the 1986 smash Top Gun (1986). Despite his obvious talent and range, it wasn't until his astonishingly believable performance as Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone's The Doors (1991) that the world sat up and took notice. Kilmer again put his good baritone to use in the movie, performing all of the concert pieces. Since then, he has played

10 movies you may have missed in 2014

or Hollywood Shuffle 2014 edition  Blue Ruin A mysterious outsider's quiet life is turned upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving himself an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family. Blue Ruin knocked me out. This was easily my favorite film of 2014 (yes I know IMDB lists the release as 2013 but its theatrical run was in April of 2014.) I can't speak highly enough of this film. If I'm perfectly honest with myself... the main reason I'm compiling this list is to mention this film again. I don't really have anything new to add but you can find my full review   here . Two Days One Night Sandra (Cotillard) has come out of the hospital to some very unwelcome news, during her stay in the hospital she has been fired. The infinitely wise and spineless management decides, the only way Sandra can hope to stay employed at the factory is to convinc

Red Army Review

We've all heard of Herb Brooks and the 1980 "miracle" at the Lake Placid Olympic games but if you are like me you probably never considered the other side of the story, the Soviet side. RED ARMY is on a macro-level a story about the Soviet Union but specifically its the story of the "most successful dynasty in sports history: the Red Army hockey team." The best documentaries are the ones that can open us up to new stories or give the viewer a fresh perspective on a familiar one. This is not a film made for sports fans alone. Director Gabe Polsky tells a deeply human story and paints an emphatic portrait of these once American adversaries. The son of first generation Russian immigrants Polsky said  he was "provided an opportunity both to explore my heritage and to examine the impact hockey had on the culture, politics and legacy of the Soviet Union." I want to discuss specific scenes in the film but at the same time I don't want to give

Director Damian Szifron on WILD TALES and two scenes from the film

Inequality, injustice and the demands of the world we live in cause stress and depression for many people. Some of them, however, explode. This is a movie about those people. Vulnerable in the face of a reality that shifts and suddenly turns unpredictable, the characters of Wild Tales cross the thin line that divides civilization and barbarism. A lover’s betrayal, a return to the repressed past and the violence woven into everyday encounters drive the characters to madness as they cede to the undeniable pleasure of losing control. Damiรกn Szifron on his latest film WILD TALES. These tales sprang from the most unrestrained corners of the imagination. While I was working to develop other projects – often dispirited by the fact that they were impossible to realize – I began writing a series of short stories to vent my frustrations. When I put them together in one volume, I realized that they were connected by a series of themes that provided unity and coherence: they were

Danny Elfam Hans Zimmer and Trent Reznor talk film composition with The Hollywood Reporter

Film composers love to talk about insomnia. Prior to  The Hollywood Reporter  roundtable with five of the industry's most sought-after film scorers, the group --  Marco Beltrami , 48 ( The Homesman ), Danny Elfman , 61 ( Big Eyes ),  John Powell , 51 ( How to Train Your Dragon 2 ),  Trent Reznor , 49 ( Gone Girl ), and  Hans Zimmer , 57 ( Interstellar ) -- chatted at length about their preferred sleep aids. Most favor Ambien, but at least one opted for a method that might or might not be entirely legal (hint: It involves THC). Then there's Zimmer, who is such a night owl, he referred to the 1 p.m. start of the sit-down as "my morning time." The discussion that followed touched on the technical, like less-than-ideal sound mixes, and the personal, including the admission that their lives are so hectic, they rarely get time to relax with family and listen to music for pleasure. Throughout, these awards contenders -- with 16 Oscar noms and two wins between them -- appe

Trailer for Ron Howards In The Heart of the Sea

A new international trailer for director  Ron Howard ’s adaptation of the  Nathaniel Philbrick  non-fiction book  In the Heart of the Sea  has landed online.  The film tells the story of the whaling ship Essex, which in 1819 was rammed by an angry whale in the South Pacific.  The surviving crew drifted for 90 days in three tiny whaleboats and encountered disease, hunger, and eventually cannibalism, and the harrowing true story served as the basis for  Herman Melville ’s  Moby Dick .  I was a big fan of what Howard put together for his previous film,  Rush , and it looks like he’s on a roll with this follow-up.  Once again reuniting with cinematographer  Anthony Dod Mantle , they appear to capture the terrifying nature of this sea expedition in visceral fashion, putting the audience right in the middle of the drama that ensues. Check out the new  In the Heart of the Sea  trailer after the jump.  The film stars  Chris Hemsworth ,  Brendan Gleeson ,  Benjamin Walker ,  Cillian Murp

HUNGRY FOR LOVE Kickstarter Campaign needs our help!!!

I just became aware of a Kicstarter Campaign that could use our help. The film has less than 48 remaining to reach its goal and its called HUNGRY FOR LOVE. I was touched by an article I came across so I reached out to producer Soojin Chung to ask her a few questions about the project. The campaign page describes the film as: Giovanni and Priscilla couldn’t be more different: Priscilla is struggling to publish her first book, after receiving a philosophy Ph. D., and Giovanni is a pastry delivery driver with dreams of traveling America on a food crawl. And each have faced their fair share of hardships: the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, overwhelming student debt… but when they meet for the first time they realize they also share a mutual passion for food. And that’s when their unexpected journey begins. On a whim, they decide to go on an all-night, five-borough dining adventure together. Determined to leave all their personal struggles behind, and enjoy themselves onc
