Ep. 153 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Me and Earl and the Dying Girl (Son of Rambow vs. Be Kind Rewind)

On this episode we attempt to recreate favorite movie moments in podcast form by looking at films where characters recreate movie moments. SON OF RAMBOW and BE KIND REWIND provided a great opportunity for a guest appearance by David from THAT MOMENT IN to talk about what he looks for in film and how he talks about the art form. Before that, we love similar moments in ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL, but have different reactions to this new release as a whole.

Trainwreck

No contemporary filmmaker has chronicled the messy human experience with the eye and ear of a comedic cultural anthropologist like JUDD APATOW. Hits as varied as those he’s directed, like Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and those he’s produced, like Superbad and Bridesmaids, are all unified by their honest, unflinching, comic look at how complicated it is to grow up in the modern world. Apatow has also built a history of helping break distinctive new comedy voices into the mainstream, from Seth Rogen to Lena Dunham, among many others. Now, in his fifth feature film as a director, Apatow again brings a portrait of an unforgettable character, and a portrayal by a breakout new comedy star, together in a film written by and starring AMY SCHUMER (TV’s Inside Amy Schumer) as a woman who lives her life without apologies, even when maybe she should apologize. Episode 63 of the True Bromance Film Podcast - Dope / Nerds

Episode 63 We take a trip back to the old school as we review the 90's nostalgic film, Dope, and share our thoughts on the best and worst movie nerds.

Dark Star: HR Gigers World

Most documentaries are so focused on capturing "true" moments they seem to forget some of the basic language of cinema and strictly conform to the language of documentary film making. While Giger's welt does capture plenty of private, intimate moments it remembers that documentaries are still films and thereby a visual medium. This story is told with a visual flare that is seldom seen in films of its kind. When was the last time you saw crane shots and aerial photography juxtaposed with Cinema Vertie?  Giger's Welt gives us an inside look at an artist who has created imagery that has terrified audiences for close to 40 years. How is Ridley Scott's Alien 36 years old? Seriously? Sweet Jesus, I feel old. Anyway, where was I? Ok... H.R. Giger is most remembered for his design of the Xenomorph but his work has been used in Sci Fi, Horror, Tattoos, Fetish Art and most corners of pop culture, or more accurately pop sub culture for the last 50 years. You are cer

Movie Review | "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015)

A caravan of crazy roams the desert, leaving in its wake a chaotic free-for-all of frantic neuroses. There’s no way to soft sell this review, so let’s just get to it. The latest “Mad Max” is an assortment of cockamamie pandemonium that leaps from one lurid explosion to the next in a momentum-less rush to keep viewers from noticing a script spread thin on character development or anything else of valuable dimension. The plot is straightforward and difficult to explain at the same time. This is mostly because it is so heavily mired in a barrage of convoluted eccentricity that hinders any chance to decipher a coherent explanation for any of its on-screen happenings. The gist is this: Max (Tom Hardy), a near mute, is captured by a group of crazy people who are chasing after Furiosa (Charlize Theron), the commander of a war rig who’s taken off with their leader’s enslaved harem. Max winds up helping them and in the gang’s ensuing escape across the desert, they must face off agains

In this episode, Dave discusses an underrated teen comedy in Easy A.  Things get a tad serious during Fangirl Fixation with Britt.  Just add alcohol, I guess.  Dave dives into the psychological literature on rumors to discuss how realistic or not the rumors in Easy A are presented.  Enjoy! Ep. 152 of War Machine vs. War Horse: The Midnight Swim (Friday the 13th vs. On Golden Pond)

On this episode we are joined by Nick Antosca, writer on the critically acclaimed television series HANNIBAL, to talk about FRIDAY THE 13th, a film he knows a little something about as he is the writer behind the upcoming reboot of the series. The other movie we will be pairing up with that horror classic is another favorite of the genre in ON GOLDEN POND. Keep listening to the episode to see if Mr. Antosca will be taking over the reboot of that particular property. This odd double feature of Film Families on the Lake has been inspired by Sarah Adina Smith's new film THE MIDNIGHT SWIM, who was nice enough to talk with us about the inspiration for the script and the filmmaking techniques she used to put audiences in a character's head.

Episode 04 of Original Remake: Oldboy 2003 and 2013

On this episode we welcome old Oldboy, new Oldboy, and Karly from the podcasts That Pop This Life and Talking Shondaland to talk about vengeance, eating octopus, and Josh Brolin's lack of body hair.

God? The Almighty Question

Its a simple question that acts as the spine of Peter Rogers documentary film. "What is God?" That simple question taken to people from all walks of life and all corners of the globe makes for an interesting examination of what God means to the individual instead of what we are told God is from institutions. The opening of the film feels somewhat like Koyaanisqatsi (without the Philip Glass score) in that we are shown how man is out of synch with nature. Rogers is substituting nature for God in this instance and thereby setting up a personal statement or point of view before examining the thoughts of his interviewees. This film will elicit unique responses from every viewer. The parts that I found amusing could be gospel to another and the moments that I found touching could evoke anger. That's the beauty of this film, its difficult to watch without examining your own personal belief system, whatever it may be. The interviews include a handful of celebrities but t

Episode 28 of War Machine vs. War Horse: A Most Wanted Man (The Spy Who Came in from the Cold vs. The Constant Gardener)

John le Carre novels have been adapted to the big screen quite well since 1965's THE SPY WHO CAME IN FROM THE COLD, so we thought it was time to butcher his work in podcast form in celebration of new to Netflix streaming A MOST WANTED MAN. Listen as Christopher Maynard doesn't fall easily for Richard Burton, solely to provide clear-eyed criticism usually missing from our show.

Sleeping With Other People Trailer

Can two serial cheaters get a second chance at love? After a one-night stand in college, New Yorkers Lainey (Alison Brie) and Jake (Jason Sudeikis) meet by chance twelve years later and discover they each have the same problem: because of their monogamy-challenged ways, neither can maintain a relationship. Determined to stay friends despite their mutual attraction, they make a pact to keep it platonic, a deal that proves easier said than done. Fresh, funny, and full of witty insights about modern love, this hilariously heartfelt film "is the rare rom-com that reminds us why we love them so much in the first place" (Time Out New York). Amanda Peet, Adam Scott, Natasha Lyonne, and Jason Mantzoukas co-star.

Episode 46 of Hydrate Level Four - Actress Diane Franklin

In episode 46, Peter interviews 80's actress Diane Franklin and get some backstory about Better Off Dead and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, and her book "The Excellent Adventures of the Last American French Foreign Exchange Babe of the 80s". Episode 151 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Dope (Can't Hardly Wait vs. Superbad)

On this episode we are joined by actor Adam Guthrie to attend a cinematic party of CAN'T HARDLY WAIT and SUPERBAD. This extremely white pairing has oddly been inspired by the trailer for the Sundance hit DOPE which just went into wide release in America, and as you will see in our spoiler-free review of this film, there's a lot more to it than just high school hijinks.

Episode 62 of THE True Bromance Film Podcast - Inside Out / Animated Characters

Episode 62 We are joined by the good doctor, David Hart of the great show, Pop Culture Case Study, to discuss the great new Pixar film, Inside Out. We pair that discussion with a debate about the best and worst animated characters in movies.

Episode 114 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Kingsman The Secret Service (Wanted vs. Kick-Ass)

On this episode we look at a comic book writer's universe of creator-owned material making its way to the silver screen with varying degrees of success. We are not talking about Alan Moore (of course), because we said SUCCESSFUL film adaptation, so instead let's move down a few tiers to Mark Millar with the adaptations of WANTED and KICK-ASS battling it out like a good comic book crossover. This is inspired by the new to video KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, and Bubbawheat from the sites Flights, Tights, and Movie Nights & Channel: Superhero will team up with us to choose a winner.

Episode 60 of Pop Culture Case Study - Toy Story and Imaginary Play

Hey everybody, Pixar's new masterpiece (?) Inside Out came out yesterday! Episode 150 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Inside Out (Fantastic Voyage vs. Innerspace)

On this episode we celebrate our 150th episode by taking a journey within ourselves, which doesn't get particularly deep as we just end up watching FANTASTIC VOYAGE and INNERSPACE. Those silly but classic films are inspired by what looks to be a new classic from Pixar in INSIDE OUT.

Episode 95 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Red Army (Once Brothers vs. The Other Dream Team)

On this episode we look at documentaries about a country's ties to their respective sports teams with a 30 for 30 film ONCE BROTHERS, which is about an Olympic basketball team that is broken up once the nation breaks out into civil war. This is very similar in premise to the other documentary we will review (except much different in tone) with THE OTHER DREAM TEAM. Hopefully that's not too much sportsing for our film nerd listeners, because first, we have an interview with Gabe Polsky, director of the new film RED ARMY.

Episode 149 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Wild Tales (Tales from the Crypt vs. Creepshow)

On this episode we take a look at the theme of revenge, something we know quite a bit about if you look at some of the movies we've made the other watch for this very podcast. In this particular instance we will be joined by guest Web Bist from the movie podcast IT'S TERRIFIC, to watch anthology films filled with vengeance, such as the 1972 version of TALES FROM THE CRYPT going up against the George A. Romero/Stephen King collaboration in CREEPSHOW. This combination of vengeful short films has been inspired by the video release of the 2014 Academy Award Best Foreign Language Film nominee WILD TALES.

Episode 61 of the True Bromance Film Podcast - Jurassic World / Movie Locations

We are taking another trip to Isla Nublar and discussing the new dinosaur flick, Jurassic World. In keeping with the crazy world that has been built on the jurassic island, we debate the best and worst movie locations.

A look Zemeckis' The Walk

Twelve people have walked on the moon. Only one has ever, or will ever, walk in the immense void between the World Trade Center towers. Philippe Petit (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), guided by his real-life mentor, Papa Rudy (Ben Kingsley), is aided by an unlikely band of international recruits, who overcome long odds, betrayals, dissension and countless close calls to conceive and execute their mad plan. Robert Zemeckis, the master director of such marvels as Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Back to the Future, Polar Express and Flight, again uses cutting edge technology in the service of an emotional, character-driven story. With innovative photorealistic techniques and IMAX® 3D wizardry, The Walk is genuine big-screen cinema, a chance for moviegoers to viscerally experience the feeling of reaching the clouds. or you could watch this
