GOOK in theaters Aug 18th

GOOK takes place on April 29, 1992 - the day the LA riots started and the day the Rodney King verdicts were announced.  Eli and Daniel, two Korean American brothers played by Justin Chon and David So, own a struggling shoe store and have an unlikely friendship with Kamilla, a streetwise 11 year old African American girl played by new actress Simone Baker, ditches school to hang out with them.  Thus, creating their own "family."   Eli stresses about the store, and Daniel tries to have a good time. It's just another typical day at the store until the Rodney King verdict is read and riots break out. With the chaos moving towards them, the trio is forced to defend the store while contemplating the future of their own personal dreams and the true meaning of family. With the ongoing discussions of race in America today, GOOK is that dialogue starter asking the question where are we now, even 25 years later. Theatrical Release Dates Friday, August 18 th , 2017

We get back behind the podcast wheel for the much anticipated BABY DRIVER, Edgar Wright's latest dork-fest which takes a look at the much used trope of the stoic getaway driver. To celebrate its release we look back at other films using a character's experience or lack thereof against veteran criminals in the two action films classics SPEED and THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS. For that conversation we welcome one of our earliest podcast supporters in  Jeremy  from the  Movie Madness Podcast , but first we consult on the perfect driving playlist with returning guest and fellow hater,  Alice Bishop . ALSO, a shoutout to Emilie Zarnow for the kick in the podcast ass! OPENING NIGHT review

2017 Directed By: Isaac Rentz Starring: Topher Grace, Anne Heche, Alona Tal, JC Chasez, Lauren Lapkus, Taye Diggs, Paul Scheer, and Rob Riggle A Stage Manager has one of the most difficult and underappreciated jobs in a theatrical production. Its a nebulous position where an individual acts as assistant to the director and production staff during the rehearsal period and then runs the production during the actual performance. Nick (Grace) is a former Broadway Actor turned Stage Manager who is running the opening night performance of "ONE HIT WONDERLAND." A musical that's something like A CHRISTMAS CAROL filtered through the artistic integrity of a THAT'S WHAT I CALL MUSIC vol. 16 CD. Nick best sums up this play when he says "who wrote this shit." Nick's inability to admit he is still in love with Chloe (Tal), a year after he broke up with her, and paralyzing stage fright have left him cynical and broken. He masks his fear with contempt

THE SKYJACKER'S TALE - Review

Directed by: Jamie Kastner Starring: Ishmael Muslim Ali (formerly LaBeet), Margaret Ratner Kunstler, Michael Ratner  Art imitates life and life imitates art. These are the sayings that are hideously overused in our world but often earn their place in our vernacular. This justification is certainly evidenced in Jamie Kastner’s latest project, The Skyjacker's Tale . The Skyjacker's Tale tells the story of Ishmael Muslim Ali (formerly known as Ishmael LaBeet), a convicted mass murderer from the Virgin Islands who has been living in exile in Cuba since forcing his way to “freedom” through the hijacking of a commercial airliner. Yes, that sentence is a mouthful, as is this complex story. One would think that to tell this story properly, the filmmaker would have to create an 8-hour opus similar to 2016’s O.J.: Made in America but Kastner is judicious and concise while illuminating the numerous twists, turns, and gray areas that are littered throughout Ishmael Muslim Ali’s st

LAFF Interview w/ A CROOKED SOMEBODY Director Trevor White

Michael Vaughn’s minister father always told him: Better to be an honest nobody than a crooked somebody. But Michael doesn’t see the harm in giving people the closure they need with the dead and travels town-to-town professing his abilities as a spirit medium. One night, Michael is kidnapped. With a knife to his throat, Michael suddenly sees the opportunity of a lifetime in his psychologically unstable captor’s desperation to make contact with the other side. Intent on saving his floundering career, Michael sets out to become a celebrity TV psychic by solving the mystery of a high-profile crime in the national spotlight. A CROOKED SOMEBODY recently had its debut at the LAFF. The film is a throwback to the independent thrillers of the 90's that hooked me on films at an impressionable age. Today my guest on the show is the director of A CROOKED SOMEBODY Trevor White. To listen to our interview w/ Trevor click play on the embedded player below.
