PROJECTING FILM: Mudbound (Days of Heaven meets The Deer Hunter)

For our latest episode we have our own little premiere party for the Netflix original MUDBOUND. This includes watching this Oscar hopeful from the comfort of our homes with at least one of your hosts in a bathrobe. After this sign of disrespect to modern cinema-going we praise the film by comparing it to the likes of DAYS OF HEAVEN and THE DEER HUNTER, for its narrative of returning veterans and also in the how DEE REES uses narration. However this does make us face the stark reality that what this up and coming filmmaker could really use on screen is Richard Gere and his fantastic hair. To help us wade through the oceans of praise, we are joined by the apricot of our eye, David Hart, of Mark As Played, The Grand Gesture, and Pop Culture Case Study. WAR MACHINE vs. WAR HORSE: Star Wars The Last Jedi (The Matrix Reloaded vs. mother!)

We return from exile, rested and with far too much blue milk for our episode on STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI. Critically applauded as a return to the peak of this franchise, a vocal minority of fans feel otherwise. Since we are aware that you waited for this podcast to advise you on a possible ticket purchase, WEB BIST of DARN THAT DREAM answers the call and tries out some new material. This is a hint to please keep listening after the cold open. Please. If you do make that choice, you will hear us debate the expectations we place on characters decisions depending on the type of film being sold. Previous sci-fi favorite THE MATRIX RELOADED arguably doomed the series with a hero agonizing over his options, and yet a rallying cry of defense came Jennifer Lawrence's fate in mother! What gives? We do. You're welcome. Twitter / Instagram / Letterboxd : @warmachinehorse You can also support this show with a donation on Patreon to get extra episodes or to progra

THE GRAND GESTURE: Crimson Peak

Keeping with the holiday spirit, we keep it all in the family with our latest look at love in Guillermo del Toro's CRIMSON PEAK. And while this may not be as romantic as his new release THE SHAPE OF WATER, this film has JESSICA CHASTAIN. Enough said. Thankfully we have guest  ANYA NOVAK  (whose work on genre film you can find  EVERYWHERE ) to say just a few more words about this great film, such as how important are rough hands in a male suitor? What about TOM HIDDLESTON's quick book reviews? Fun and flirty or just cover for an illiterate mind operating soft hands? And more importantly... do we prefer ghosts or a jealous sister as the third party to our love triangle? Both have pros and cons that we will reveal in our latest episode of THE GRAND GESTURE! THE APARTMENT Blu-ray Review

In 1960, following on from the success of their collaboration on Some Like it Hot, director Billy Wilder (Ace in the Hole, Sunset Boulevard) reteamed with actor Jack Lemmon (The Odd Couple, Glengarry Glen Ross) for what many consider the pinnacle of their respective careers: The Apartment. C.C. "Bud" Baxter (Lemmon) is a lowly Manhattan office drone with a lucrative sideline in renting out his apartment to adulterous company bosses and their mistresses. When Bud enters into a similar arrangement the firm's personnel director, J.D. Sheldrake (Fred MacMurray, Double Indemnity), his career prospects begin to look up... and up. But when he discovers that Sheldrake's mistress is Fran Kubelik (Shirley MacLaine, Irma la Douce), the girl of his dreams, he finds himself forced to choose between his career and the woman he loves... The film itself plays incredibly well for a 50-year-old look at office place sexual politics. While the women in the film (outside of Fran)

MARK AS PLAYED: Star Wars The Last Jedi and Critic Proof Cinema

On this episode our hosts  Jason  of  ATLANTIC SCREEN CONNECTION  and  Jairo  of  THE TRUE BROMANCE FILM PODCAST  talk about their hopes, dreams, fears, and axieties for the latest chapter in the STAR WARS saga: THE LAST JEDI. But what they don't talk about are any of the early reviews that have come out about this film. The subject for this episode is Critic Proof Cinema, which ranges from fan favorites such as HARRY POTTER to film snob untouchables like PAUL THOMAS ANDERSON. How do we approach movies that we have already developed such an affinity for? To help answer that question we recommend two more great movie podcasts in  LINOLEUM KNIFE  and  RED LETTER MEDIA's BEST OF THE WORST . MARK AS PLAYED: The Disaster Artist and Ironic Enjoyment

On this episode we ask you to ironically enjoy our latest episode on THE DISASTER ARTIST and ironic enjoyment at the movies. To do so we actually enjoy a couple of other movie podcasts on this outbreak of detachment occuring in modern film fandom.  FIRST TIME WATCHERS  and  THE CANON  join James Franco in enlightening the world on all that is good about bad cinema, but we also hold out hope that these great shows can also point out all the good in our bad podcast! If not, we just point you in their direction. Enjoy!
