Movie Review | Nightcrawler (2014) | A Slick Piece of Cinema

Underneath the dim lights of a nocturnal Los Angeles, a hollow eyed creature claws out of the ether. He is a predator equipped with cunning, ambition and a chillingly calm demeanor. He is Lou Bloom (Jake Gyllenhaal), a driven man whose most dangerous weapon is his mind and it might be coming unhinged. Dan Gilroy’s directorial debut is a thrilling character study that plunges viewers into the seedy underworld of television journalism alongside an engrossingly strange character. Bloom is looking to make a sizeable income and when he follows police cruisers to the scene of an accident, he sets his sights on a promising new career opportunity. With his curiosity peeked by what he witnesses, he begins asking questions and learns about “nightcrawling”, the business of capturing video footage of horrific crime or accident scenes, to sell to television stations for airing on the news. There is a competitive angle to it and Bloom has his eyes set on dominating the field, which is b

Episode 130 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Candlestick (Strangers on a Train vs. Dial M for Murder)

On this episode we plot the perfect Hitchcockian murder with writer/director Christopher Presswell and talk about his homage to those films with his new movie, CANDLESTICK. This inspires a look back at two of The Master's works where a perfect murder is planned with the added benefit of other parties helping to do the dirty work. Those two older films are STRANGERS ON A TRAIN vs. DIAL M FOR MURDER. Emily Mackay of Movie N' Mayhem joins me to debate those great works of art, and of course, another round of Movie Star Hot or Not.

Forbidden Empire review

2015 Directed By Oleg Stepchenko Starring Jason Flemyng, Andrey Smolyakov and Aleksey Chadov Forbidden Empire is an adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's popular 1835 short story about the demon Viy -- whose gaze was deadly if met eye-to-eye -- it was originally scheduled to be released in 2009 to coincide with the 200th anniversary of Gogol's birth. Jason Flemyng stars as Dzhonatan Grin a cartographer who takes on the task of mapping the uncharted lands of Transylvania. How well do you know your Nikolai Gogol? I'm not sure if a deep appreciation of 200 year old Russian literature is a prerequisite for Forbidden Empire but I have a feeling it would richen the experience.  I have a similar feeling when I watch Terry Gilliam films. Every frame is bursting with purpose, nothing is accidental and every time you revisit the film some new discovery awaits you. This film (once again like the films of Gilliam) is densely layered but completely approachable. High art for the mas
