LORDS OF DOGTOWN Blu-ray Review

LORDS OF DOGTOWN tells the unbelievable but true story of three teenagers from California who took skateboarding to heights that hadn't previously been imagined and changed the sports world forever. Stacy Peralta (John Robinson), Tony Alva (Victor Rasuk) and Jay Adams (Emile Hirsch, Into the Wild) are the Z-Boys, a bunch of nobodies until they join board designer Skip Engblom (Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight) to create a new style of skateboarding that becomes a worldwide phenomenon. But when their hobby becomes a business, the success shreds their friendship. Directed by Catherine Hardwicke (Thirteen, Twilight) and featuring an all-star cast including Michael Angarano, Nikki Reed, Rebecca De Mornay, Johnny Knoxville, America Ferrera, and Mitch Hedberg. The stand out performance in the film comes from Heath Ledger. I'm not sure if his turn as Skip can fully be appreciated without seeing the man himself. Once you dig into the special features it becomes clear that Heath Led

NOVEMBER Review

Werewolves? Check. The plague? Sure. Pagans selling their souls? Absolutely. NOVEMBER is set in an Estonian village where the batshit crazy supernatural leanings of director Rainer Sarnet are allowed to run free. The film is essentially a twisted fairy tale about unrequited love or what a Lars Von Trier romantic comedy might look like. In NOVEMBER , the villagers' fundamental issue is how to survive the frosty, dull winter. Nothing in this bizarre universe is unthinkable. Individuals take from each other without regard, from their German house rulers, from spirits, from Satan, and Christ himself. The only moral compass is self-interest. A youthful farmgirl Liina (Rea Lest) is miserably infatuated with Hans (Jörgen Liik), a close-by farmhand, whose heart she loses to the little girl of the German estate master. Keeping in mind the end goal to recover his affection, Liina is willing to do whatever it takes, regardless of whether that implies taking advantage of the dark enchant

ORIGINAL REMAKE: The Jackie Robinson Story and 42

To promote the new indie film BLACK PANTHER we go back to a 2013 film starring Chadwick Boseman, 42. In this film, Mr. Boseman has the challenge of not only playing Jackie Robinson who broke the color barrier in basseball, but also to try and best Mr. Robinson who played himself in THE JACKIE ROBINSON STORY. This is a first in ORIGINAL REMAKE, although it will not be the first time we do a little sports talk radio. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on if you are a baseball fan, one host has to break these movies down in basketball terms and the other still laments Kevin Durant not making his way to the Celtics. And with that we just lost all of our movie podcast listeners... did we mention that this in celebration of a little movie called BLACK PANTHER? THE GRAND GESTURE: Who Framed Roger Rabbit

On this episode we take a trip back to the late 80s when cartoon rabbits didn't make fun of those with allergies and instead would go on angry drunken heartbroken benders. To do this we need an expert, not in drunken benders, but in that time period. So joining us for the first time is  Charlee  of  WORD TO THE MUTHA , who hosts her own podcast looking back on music from the late 80s/early 90s. Give this episode a listen and feel old with us! UFCW Asks Leading Female Filmmakers to End Partnership with Walmart’s Oscars Campaign

In light of Walmart’s track record of mistreating its women workforce, Making Change at Walmart (MCAW) and the United Food & Commercial Workers (UFCW) Secretary-Treasurer, Esther Lopez, sent a joint letter to Melissa McCarthy, Dee Rees, and Nancy Meyers, urging them to stand up for the rights of working women and end their Oscars Awards partnership with Walmart. The letter from MCAW was in response to the three prominent female celebrities’ partnership with Walmart to produce the company’s television commercials that will air during the Oscars Awards ceremony. As part of the effort to highlight Walmart’s track record, MCAW is also publishing a full-page ad in today’s edition of Variety magazine. “While at face value this would seem to represent a positive campaign, we urge to you look at the facts about Walmart’s past actions that reflect on its values. Values that have had a negative impact on countless women and their families, and that send a terrible message as to what

THE STAR Blu-ray Review

THE STAR arrives on Blu-ray + DVD + Digital today February 20 from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. The simple but effective animated comedy tells the story of a donkey named Bo (Steven Yeun, “The Walking Dead”), who sees himself as destined for greater things. The daily grind at the village mill leaves him feeling incomplete and longing. His ill at ease nature eventually pushes to the point where he decides to break free and follow his heart. In the same way Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead is a retelling of Hamlet through the eyes of ancillary characters, THE STAR is a retelling of the nativity through the eyes of the animals that were there that night. The human characters take a backseat to a donkey and his barnyard buddies. Along his way, Bo teams up with Ruth (Aidy Bryant, “Saturday Night Live”), a sheep who has lost her flock and Dave (Keegan-Michael Key, “Key and Peele”), a dove with lofty aspirations, along with three camels voiced by Tracy Morgan (“30 Rock

99 FROM 99: October Sky

Dare to dream with us as we travel back to the days before rich men fired sports cars into space, to the simpler days when Jake Gyllenhaal was just a young actor playing a young man in West Virginia dreaming of space and a way out of a coal mining future. One of our hosts has no history with OCTOBER SKY, nor any history background when it comes to space exploration, and the other host sees this Joe Johnston film as something of a hidden gem (while also having no practical knowledge about rockets or space exploration). SOBER CINEMA: Six Years Later - THE WOMAN IN BLACK and THE INNKEEPERS

Six years ago on February 3, 2012 this great country experienced two hauntings and the invasion of Daniel Radcliffe yet again to the top of the box office charts. And although THE WOMAN IN BLACK was popular enough to spawn a sequel (which was not so popular) we take this as an opportunity to play catch up with this ghost story as well as the one presented in Ti West's THE INNKEEPERS which had its limited release on the same weekend. Along the way we debate the roles chosen by the man previously known as Harry Potter, and also if a grown man is allowed to have a crush on Sara Paxton (SPOILER: Google says yes). Speaking of spoilers, stick around until the end of the episode as we debate both twist endings and how they add to the enjoyment of both films.
