MADHOUSE Blu-ray review

1981 Directed By: Ovidio Assontis Starring: Trish Everly, Michael MacRae, Allison Biggers, and Dennis Robertson Written By: Ovidio Assontis and Stephen Blakely MANY PEOPLE VISIT... NO ONE EVER LEAVES MADHOUSE Blu-ray review Julia (Trish Everly) has spent the better part of her life living in denial. Trying to forget about the cruel and inhumane treatment she received as a child at the hands of her twin sister Mary (Allison Biggers). Time has not softened Mary, before escaping a hospital where she has been treated for a disease that has left her disfigured, she vows to get revenge on her sister. MADHOUSE is setup as a ticking time clock where we count down the days until Julia's birthday, the day Mary has promised to exact revenge. Assontis is best known for his work on THE CURSE and PIRANHA 2: THE SPAWNING but I've always felt his operatic sensibilities were best suited to films like MADHOUSE. A production shot entirely on location in Savannah Georgia, his fil

LAFF interview w/ Sam Patton on DESOLATION

Interview with DESOLATION director Sam Patton DESOLATION is a film about a mother who takes her son and her best friend on a trip into the remote wilderness to scatter his father's ashes; they must confront their fears when a lone hiker begins following them. Today on the show my guest is Sam Patton, a producer and director whose feature film debut DESOLATION will be playing at LAFF on Jun, 21st at 9:30 PM at the ArcLight Culver City 4. I had Sam on the show to discuss his film, George Lucas, Chinatown, and how film snobs like ourselves need to calm down and remember its ok to watch a movie on an iPhone. For tickets to the film go to: https://tickets.lafilmfestival.com Click play on the embedded player below to hear my conversation with Sam.

Ep. 189 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Bone Tomahawk (Ravenous vs. We Are What We Are)

On this episode we track cannibals across a triple feature of films. First we posse up with Kurt Russell and his fantastic mustache for the new film BONE TOMAHAWK. We are then joined by friend of the show Derek Stewart who has no mustache but talks 1999’s RAVENOUS vs. 2013’s WE ARE WHAT WE ARE. In the former, Guy Pearce is adopted into a cannibal family of soldiers exiled from society, while the latter introduces us to a long line of cannibals under threat of exposure by a small town detective. We also debate the leading man abilities of James Woods, who has nothing to do with any of these films.

Ep. #052 of Cinematic for the People: Steve Jobs/Goosebumps/The Final Girls

On this ungodly long episode of Cinematic for the People, we along with special guests Jeff Broitman, Clinton Cornwell, Christina Johnson and Nathan Uhlig take a look at new releases Steve Jobs, Goosebumps, The Final Girls, and Rock the Kasbah. We then wrap up our October Horror Movie segment with Diabolique(1955) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Hope you enjoy and always remember you can use our guide below to skip forward in the episode. God knows that's what I do. 00:56- Steve Jobs 27:47- Goosebumps 45:39- The Final Girls 57:14- Rock the Kasbah 1:19:55- Halloween Segment, Diabolique (1955) & A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) 1:43:32- Outro and Preview for Next Week

Ep. 12 of Original Remake: Halloween 1978 and 2007

In this episode we celebrate Halloween with... Halloween! John Carpenter's genre defining film faces off against Rob Zombie's remake, and we accuse one of these filmmakers of being the quarterback on the couch. We'll let you guess which one. To find out for sure, listen to our discussion with our horror expert guest Derek Stewart.

Ep. 185 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Crimson Peak (Rebecca vs. A Good Marriage)

On  this episode we talk about the much anticipated CRIMSON PEAK with our friend Web Bist from the podcast  It’s Terrific   and then we move on to Creepy Marriages with a Third Party by checking out Alfred Hitchcock’s REBECCA and the Stephen King film adaptation of A GOOD MARRIAGE with our friends over at the  Plain Label Podcast , Eric and Rachel. But first,  we are first in line for  the latest socially acceptable chance to stare at Jessica Chastain for two hours.

Episode 48 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Annabelle (Magic vs. Child's Play)

ANNABELLE does not inspire us to collect dolls, but two other creepy dolls in cinema from MAGIC & CHILD'S PLAY might. However it is an unfair fight as only one film has Ann-Margret and company.  GUEST: Congo Rilla from the Signals of Fury podcast Soiled Restroom Cinema, joins us to offer creepy doll defense techniques.

Episode 182 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Knock Knock (Funny Games vs. The Purge)

We go on multiple movie home invasions inspired by Eli Roth’s latest, KNOCK KNOCK. First, a look at the American remake of FUNNY GAMES from 2007 where Naomi Watts and Tim Roth play an unsuspecting married couple vacationing at their summer home when two strange young men stop by to borrow some eggs and things escalate from their with horrific results. Then in THE PURGE, Ethan Hawke and his family think that they are well prepared and protected from the annual night of crime, death, and destruction sanctioned by the government. All of this because Eli Roth came knocking on our podcast door with his new film.

Episode 76 of Pop Culture Case Study - It Follows and Sexual Identity

In this episode, Dave invites guest, Chris Maynard from  Following Films , to talk about one of the film highlights of the year, in It Follows.  Britt joins us to give a mild recommendation to watch It Follows, but maybe without drinking or looking at your phone!  Dave talks about sexual fluidity and self concept clarity.  Chris and Dave talk about It Follows on deeper levels, discussing sexual identity in western culture and how it affects us all. Sexual Fluidity Not Always A Straight Path Self-Concept Clarity Listen! Fangirl Fixation: 0:06:53 Sexual Identity: 0:21:10 It Follows with Chris: 0:33:24 Rate and Review on iTunes!

Episode 13 of Pop Culture Case Study - Alien and Female Empowerment

In this episode, Dave discusses the "Strong Female Character."  Is it a good or a bad thing?  Can it be both?  In order to do this, he watches maybe the original strong female character, or at the very least, the first female action hero badass.  Ellen Ripley in Alien is definitely the original female action hero.  He also details research on gender inequity in film and television.  You know, keepin it light :) Listen!

Ep. 43 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Tusk (The Fly vs. Splice)

On this episode, the three of us have gathered to say WalrusYes to TUSK, about a man who has the simple dream of wanting to turn another man into a walrus. This inspires a look back at other mishaps in the history of man becoming more than human with 1986’s THE FLY and the 2009 film, SPLICE.  We also discuss Jeff Goldblum's hair and the exploding interest in podcasts about men's hair on film.  So before you race off and start the hashtag  WarmachinehorseYes, check out this episode. You may find our podcast just as terrifying.

Ep. 18 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Deliver Us From Evil (The Exorcist vs. The Evil Dead)

Begin #30DaysOfHorror with us and our very first horror-filled episode as DELIVER US FROM EVIL gets possessed by two titans of the genre: THE EXORCIST and THE EVIL DEAD. We attempt to come to the light in our discussion on horror cinema, and also (oddly) 3D movies.

Episode 64 of Hydrate Level Four - Sleepy Hollow

Peter and Phoenix are joined by Sarah of Project Fandom to discuss the 1999 Tim Burton retelling of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving.

Ep. 176 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Everest (Frozen vs. The Grey)

On this episode we are joined by Brad from the  Movie Bears Podcast  to help tackle the elements found in the 2010 horror movie FROZEN and the somber Liam Neeson survival film THE GREY. But first Ben from  Cinematic For the People  joins for a filmgoing summit of new release EVEREST.

Episode 173 of War Machine vs. War Horse: The Visit (Burnt Offerings vs. The Skeleton Key)

On this episode we go stay with some old people in a pair of horror films. BURNT OFFERINGS has us hosted by Karen Black, Oliver Reed, and Bette Davis as a family gets the deal of a lifetime with very cheap rent for a huge estate, with the catch being that they have to care for an elderly and extremely private woman in the attic. In the more recent THE SKELETON KEY, Kate Hudson's job as a caregiver sends her to the swamps of Louisiana as John Hurt plays a man who has suffered a stroke... and may be suffering in silence under the watchful eye of his creepy wife. This visit with creepy old folks in creepy old houses has been inspired by fallen director M. Night Shyamalan's new film, THE VISIT.

Ep. 126 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Backcountry (The Bear vs. The Edge)

On this episode we continue to challenge our manhood, but only through a film experience with THE BEAR taking on THE EDGE. This decision to fight a bear and in this case two bear films fighting each other for our movie amusement has been inspired by the new horror film BACKCOUNTRY. Our own Chris Maynard was a part of a press junket where he got to talk with the film’s writer and director, Adam MacDonald.

Ep. 164 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Dark Places (Psycho vs. Halloween)

On this episode we present part two of our MAMO themed week, which is a great podcast that recently celebrated its tenth year. Last time we had Matt Brown on the show to talk superhero reboots, this time it's the other half of MAMO in Matthew Price who joins us for a theme of keeping murder in the family with two horror classics: PSYCHO and HALLOWEEN. You can find more from Mr. Price on this genre by checking out his other podcast, the aptly titled Let's Scare Matthew Price to Death. But first, we discuss the inspiration for this particular battle of the horror titans, the second Gillian Flynn big screen adaptation in DARK PLACES.

Ep. 152 of War Machine vs. War Horse: The Midnight Swim (Friday the 13th vs. On Golden Pond)

On this episode we are joined by Nick Antosca, writer on the critically acclaimed television series HANNIBAL, to talk about FRIDAY THE 13th, a film he knows a little something about as he is the writer behind the upcoming reboot of the series. The other movie we will be pairing up with that horror classic is another favorite of the genre in ON GOLDEN POND. Keep listening to the episode to see if Mr. Antosca will be taking over the reboot of that particular property. This odd double feature of Film Families on the Lake has been inspired by Sarah Adina Smith's new film THE MIDNIGHT SWIM, who was nice enough to talk with us about the inspiration for the script and the filmmaking techniques she used to put audiences in a character's head.

Episode 149 of War Machine vs. War Horse: Wild Tales (Tales from the Crypt vs. Creepshow)

On this episode we take a look at the theme of revenge, something we know quite a bit about if you look at some of the movies we've made the other watch for this very podcast. In this particular instance we will be joined by guest Web Bist from the movie podcast IT'S TERRIFIC, to watch anthology films filled with vengeance, such as the 1972 version of TALES FROM THE CRYPT going up against the George A. Romero/Stephen King collaboration in CREEPSHOW. This combination of vengeful short films has been inspired by the video release of the 2014 Academy Award Best Foreign Language Film nominee WILD TALES.

Episode 03 of Original Remake: The Haunting 1963 and 1999

Like the characters in THE HAUNTING, both from 1963 and 1999, we decided to stay in another haunted house after our prior POLTERGEIST episode. And unfortunately we don't have a mutual love of Sam Rockwell to save us from the evil spirits, instead discussing the haunted year of 1999 for Liam Neeson's career, the scary aging process of CGI effects, and also where you can find us haunting other podcasts.
