RELIC to Screen at Drive-ins For Advance Run

Ahead of its July 10th theatrical and Digital/VOD date, IFC Films is bringing RELIC to drive-in theaters only as an advance week-run beginning July 3rd as studios delay new releases to later in the summer. With a current score of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, RELIC is one of the year’s most highly anticipated genre films of the Summer.

Recently heralded as one of Indiewire’s ‘20 Rising Women Directors You Need to Know in 2020’, Japanese-Australian director Natalie Erika James’ feature debut is a fresh and terrifying twist on the notorious haunted house tale. When elderly mother Edna (Robyn Nevin) inexplicably vanishes, her daughter Kay (Emily Mortimer) and granddaughter Sam (Bella Heathcote) rush to their family's decaying country home, finding clues of her increasing dementia scattered around the house in her absence. As Edna's behavior turns increasingly volatile, both begin to sense that an insidious presence in the house might be taking control of her. All three generations of women are brought together through trauma and a powerful sense of strength and loyalty to face the ultimate fear together.

Lisa Schwartz, Co-President of IFC Films said, “We’re very pleased to have the opportunity to support our drive-in partners during the July 4th holiday weekend. We have been immensely grateful for their support of IFC Films over the last few months during complicated and unprecedented circumstances. We’re happy we are able to return the favor.”

Arianna Bocco EVP of Acquisitions and Productions of IFC Films added, “RELIC is the kind of horror film that drive-ins traditionally thrive on, and we’re delighted to give even greater visibility to a vibrant and important new voice in the genre.”

RELIC is produced by Anna McLeish, Sarah Shaw of Carver Films, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Riva Marker of Nine Stories and Anthony Russo, Joe Russo, Todd Makurath and Mike Larocca of AGBO executive producing. RELIC had its world premiere in the Midnight section at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews and was programmed in the Midnighters section at SXSW.

Following an unprecedented indie run at drive-in theaters throughout May and April with THE WRETCHED, RELIC continues to lead IFC FIlms’ slate through a shifting and innovative summer strategy including additional directorial debuts from Shannon Murphy’s BABYTEETH and Dave Franco’s THE RENTAL.

Trainwreck

No contemporary filmmaker has chronicled the messy human experience with the eye and ear of a comedic cultural anthropologist like JUDD APATOW. Hits as varied as those he’s directed, like Knocked Up and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and those he’s produced, like Superbad and Bridesmaids, are all unified by their honest, unflinching, comic look at how complicated it is to grow up in the modern world. Apatow has also built a history of helping break distinctive new comedy voices into the mainstream, from Seth Rogen to Lena Dunham, among many others. Now, in his fifth feature film as a director, Apatow again brings a portrait of an unforgettable character, and a portrayal by a breakout new comedy star, together in a film written by and starring AMY SCHUMER (TV’s Inside Amy Schumer) as a woman who lives her life without apologies, even when maybe she should apologize.
