PASSION Blu-ray Review

Passion

Passion, the debut feature from Ryusuke Hamaguchi, is a mesmerizing exploration of intersecting love triangles and the complex emotions that come with them. Released on Blu-ray, this film provides an intimate and thought-provoking look at the intricacies of modern relationships, showcasing Hamaguchi's early talent as an auteur and foreshadowing his later acclaimed works.

The story revolves around a group of thirtysomethings who find themselves entangled in a web of love, secrets, and confessions. The story unfolds as a couple, Kaho and Tomoya, announce their engagement to their friends during dinner, only to reveal a past affair by the groom. What follows is an emotionally charged evening where the characters are led into a series of deeply vulnerable and shocking exchanges.

The film masterfully delves into the exposed-nerve confessions and unrequited attachments of its characters, portraying their struggles with raw and unfiltered honesty. It's a testament to Hamaguchi's skill as a director that he can depict the complexity of emotions with such authenticity.

As a student thesis project at Tokyo University of the Arts, Passion showcases Hamaguchi's early prowess as a filmmaker. His rich and nuanced insight into modern relationships is evident throughout the film. While it may not have the polished look of his later works, such as "Happy Hour," "Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy," and "Drive My Car," it lays the thematic foundations for those films. It's fascinating to see the seeds of his future success in this debut work.

The bonus features included in this Blu-ray release are a delightful addition for fans of Hamaguci's work. Director Ryusuke Hamaguchi provides a personal introduction, offering insight into the creative process behind "Passion." Additionally, "From Passion to Fortune," a video essay by film and theatre writer Kenji Fujishima, further enriches the viewing experience by providing a deeper analysis of the film.

Ryusuke Hamaguchi's background and career trajectory are presented in the Director's Biography section. His journey from the University of Tokyo to his festival debut in 2008 with "Passion" and his subsequent works, including award-winning films such as "Happy Hour," "Asako I & II," and "Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy," showcases his evolution as a filmmaker with a distinctive voice.

In terms of technical aspects, the 2.39:1 widescreen aspect ratio preserves the film's original cinematic presentation, allowing viewers to appreciate Hamaguchi's masterful framing.

"Passion" is a must-have for fans of world cinema and those who appreciate thought-provoking dramas. This Blu-ray release not only presents the film in its full glory but also offers a deeper understanding of the director's journey and creative process through its bonus features. Ryusuke Hamaguchi's directorial debut is a poignant exploration of love, secrets, and the vulnerabilities that bind us all, making "Passion" a significant addition to any cinephile's collection.

The ending is open to interpretation and has been the subject of much debate among viewers. Here's a breakdown of the ending: Diane's Dream vs. Reality: Throughout the film, there are two main narrative threads: one follows Betty/Diane's dreamlike experiences in Hollywood, and the other delves into Diane's harsh reality. Betty/Diane's Descent into Madness: Betty, played by Naomi Watts, represents Diane's idealized self—a hopeful and innocent aspiring actress. However, as the film progresses, it becomes clear that Betty's story is unraveling, and her identity begins to merge with Diane's. This culminates in the revelation that Betty is merely a construct of Di...
