Blumhouse’s ‘Speak No Evil’ Set for Digital Release, with James McAvoy in a Career-Defining Performance

Blumhouse’s latest thriller, Speak No Evil, which has been sending chills down the spines of theatergoers, is making its way to digital platforms tomorrow, October 1, 2024, courtesy of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. The unsettling psychological horror film, starring James McAvoy will also be available on Blu-ray™ and DVD on November 19, 2024.

Directed and written by James Watkins, known for helming hits like Eden Lake and The Woman in Black, Speak No Evil takes inspiration from the screenplay of the 2022 Danish horror sensation Gæsterne by Christian Tafdrup and Mads Tafdrup. This American adaptation stays true to the original's creeping tension while infusing it with Blumhouse's signature brand of discomforting horror.

The film follows American couple Ben and Louise, played by Scoot McNairy (A Quiet Place II) and Mackenzie Davis (Terminator: Dark Fate), who, after befriending a British couple on vacation, accept a seemingly innocent invitation to spend a weekend at their idyllic country estate. Accompanied by their daughter, they soon uncover their hosts’ darker motives, leading to a chilling unraveling of the family dynamic. McAvoy’s seemingly gracious host character guides the couple into a nightmare that escalates with each passing moment.

Speak No Evil features an ensemble cast that includes Aisling Franciosi (Game of Thrones) and Alix West Lefler (The Good Nurse), while newcomer Dan Hough makes a striking debut in a crucial role. Together, the cast delivers performances that dive deep into the psychological horror of navigating social norms gone awry.

For fans looking to dive deeper into the making of the film, exclusive bonus features will be available when purchased through participating retailers such as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, Comcast Xfinity, and Movies Anywhere. These features include:

  • Nuclear Families: A behind-the-scenes look at what attracted McAvoy and the rest of the cast to this eerie project, exploring the intricate dynamics of the film’s two central families.
  • A Horrifying Crescendo: Director James Watkins and cast members discuss the chilling escalation of tension, touching on the psychological horror that underpins the film’s final act.
  • The Farmhouse of Horrors: An immersive exploration of the film’s unnerving central location, showing how production design transformed the idyllic farmhouse into a setting of dread.
  • Feature Commentary with Writer/Director James Watkins: A full-length audio commentary in which Watkins breaks down the film’s key moments and the creative decisions that shaped Speak No Evil’s atmosphere of impending terror.

Blumhouse, known for delivering box office hits like The Black Phone and Get Out, continues its streak of unsettling psychological horror with Speak No Evil, offering a disconcerting narrative that weaves together themes of social anxiety, parental fears, and the lengths people will go to maintain appearances.

With McAvoy’s masterful performance at its center, this slow-burning thriller is poised to make a lasting impression both in its home entertainment release and in the annals of modern horror. Fans of psychological thrillers and Blumhouse’s unique take on terror won’t miss this one when it hits digital platforms on October 1.

Explaining the Ending of MULHOLLAND DRIVE

David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive remains one of the most haunting and enigmatic films ever made. It operates like a riddle that refuses to be solved, luring the viewer into a world where time, memory, and identity dissolve into one another. What begins as a mysterious, almost whimsical Hollywood fairy tale gradually transforms into a psychological nightmare. By the end, it’s clear that what we’ve been watching is not a mystery to be unraveled but an emotional landscape, the mind of a woman caught between fantasy and despair. The film tells the story of two women, Betty Elms and Rita, whose lives intertwine after Rita survives a car crash and loses her memory. Betty, a bright and optimistic aspiring actress freshly arrived in Los Angeles, takes her in. Together, they embark on an investigation into Rita’s identity, which unfolds like a noir detective story bathed in dreamlike light. Everything about this world feels heightened: Betty’s charm, the coincidence of events, and the ease with w...

Explaining the Ending of No Country for Old Men

No Country for Old Men is a tense, spare, and philosophical thriller that upends traditional narrative expectations. While it contains the elements of a crime drama—drug deals, hitmen, shootouts—it refuses to follow a conventional path. By the time the film ends, the central conflict seems unresolved, the villain walks away, and the protagonist we’ve been following disappears offscreen. To understand the film’s ending, one must look beyond plot and consider its themes: fate, violence, moral decay, and the erosion of order in the modern world. The Narrative Setup The story begins with Llewelyn Moss (Josh Brolin), a Vietnam veteran who discovers a drug deal gone wrong in the Texas desert and makes off with $2 million in cash. Anton Chigurh (Javier Bardem), a remorseless hitman, is sent to retrieve the money. Sheriff Ed Tom Bell (Tommy Lee Jones), a weary and introspective lawman, tries to make sense of the violence unfolding around him. At first glance, the film appears to set up a c...
