Tess & The Details Ignite Punk Energy into "Maniac" – A Cover You Didn’t Know You Needed

Tess & The Details have taken the 1983 Flashdance anthem "Maniac" and transformed it into a full-throttle punk rock frenzy—proving that some songs are just waiting for a high-energy, distorted rebirth.

The San Francisco-based punk outfit, known for their raw intensity and infectious live performances, stumbled upon the idea in a moment of spontaneous inspiration outside Toot’s Tavern. What started as a joke quickly turned into a staple of their live set, and now, thanks to their collaboration with Wiretap Records and producer Jacob Light, it’s officially out for the world to hear.

From the very first note, "Maniac" trades its original synth-heavy sheen for gritty guitars, relentless drums, and Tess Stevens’ dynamic vocals. The band injects an urgency that transforms the song from a cinematic dance track into a rebellious, sweat-drenched punk anthem. But more than just a sonic upgrade, their version gives the lyrics a whole new weight. Lines like “It can cut you like a knife, if the gift becomes the fire” take on a darker, more intense meaning, shifting from a metaphor for dance obsession to something rawer—perhaps ambition, struggle, or even survival.

Whether by design or not, Tess & The Details have made "Maniac" feel prescient and powerful. In their hands, the song transcends its ‘80s dance-movie roots and becomes an anthem of chaos, passion, and relentless drive. What once felt tied to a training montage now carries an edge of real-world urgency—speaking to the unrelenting pursuit of something greater, despite the cost.

And if the sonic reinvention wasn’t enough, the band doubles down with an ‘80s-inspired music video that fully embraces the over-the-top spirit of Flashdance. Directed by Devin Zamora, the video delivers nostalgic absurdity in all the best ways, proving the band’s ability to have fun while staying true to their punk ethos.

With this release, Tess & The Details showcase their knack for blending attitude, musicianship, and an undeniable sense of fun. "Maniac" isn’t just a cover—it’s a reinvention, a reclamation, and a statement. And if this is any indication of what’s to come in 2025, we’re all in for one hell of a ride.

"Maniac" is out now via Wiretap Records. Don't take my word for it check out the video below!

MULHOLLAND DRIVE Ending Explained

MULHOLLAND DRIVE is a complex and surreal film directed by David Lynch, known for its non-linear narrative and dreamlike sequences. The ending is open to interpretation and has been the subject of much debate among viewers. Here's a breakdown of the ending: Diane's Dream vs. Reality: Throughout the film, there are two main narrative threads: one follows Betty/Diane's dreamlike experiences in Hollywood, and the other delves into Diane's harsh reality. The ending reveals that the majority of the film has been a dream constructed by Diane Selwyn, a failed actress, as a means to escape the guilt and pain of her actions. Betty/Diane's Descent into Madness: Betty, played by Naomi Watts, represents Diane's idealized self—a hopeful and innocent aspiring actress. However, as the film progresses, it becomes clear that Betty's story is unraveling, and her identity begins to merge with Diane's. This culminates in the revelation that Betty is merely a construct of Di...

Blu-ray Review: Presence

Steven Soderbergh’s Presence is not just a ghost story—it’s a deeply personal, introspective, and stylistically daring supernatural thriller that stands out for its bold use of perspective and moral depth. Shot entirely from the first-person point of view of a spirit, the film immerses the viewer into the consciousness of an unseen entity navigating a family’s domestic unraveling. It’s not only a technical experiment, but a story with emotional weight, subtle revelations, and a chilling undercurrent of tragedy. Premiering at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and released by Neon in early 2025, Presence has become a sleeper hit, earning $10.5 million on a modest $2 million budget. Directed, shot, and edited by Soderbergh, with a script from veteran screenwriter David Koepp, the film offers an experience that is simultaneously eerie, emotionally nuanced, and structurally inventive.
