Steven Spielberg Returns to the Thriller Genre With Disclosure Day

What if the greatest question in human history was suddenly answered—and the answer belonged to everyone?

This summer, audiences around the world will confront that possibility in Disclosure Day, a new original event film from Universal Pictures, created and directed by legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg. Framed as a high-stakes thriller, the film explores the emotional, political, and existential shockwaves that follow proof that humanity is not alone in the universe.

Set against the backdrop of a global reckoning, Disclosure Day asks a chillingly simple question: If someone showed you undeniable proof that we weren’t alone, would that truth comfort you—or terrify you? The film positions that revelation not as a distant science-fiction concept, but as an immediate and deeply human crisis, shared by all seven billion people on Earth.

Spielberg has assembled a formidable ensemble to bring this story to life. The film stars SAG Award winner and Oscar nominee Emily Blunt (Oppenheimer, A Quiet Place), alongside Emmy and Golden Globe winner Josh O’Connor (Challengers, The Crown). They are joined by Academy Award winner Colin Firth (The King’s Speech, Kingsman), Eve Hewson (Bad Sisters, The Perfect Couple), and two-time Oscar nominee Colman Domingo (Sing Sing, Rustin).

Together, the cast anchors the film’s global scope with intimate, character-driven performances, grounding its extraordinary premise in personal fear, awe, and moral uncertainty.

Disclosure Day is based on an original story by Spielberg, with a screenplay by longtime collaborator David Koepp. Their creative partnership has previously delivered some of modern cinema’s most iconic blockbusters, including Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Collectively, those films earned more than $3 billion worldwide.

Koepp also penned the screenplay for 2025’s Jurassic World Rebirth, further cementing his role as one of Hollywood’s most prolific blockbuster storytellers. In Disclosure Day, his writing returns to the tension-driven, idea-rich territory that defined his earlier collaborations with Spielberg.

Few filmmakers loom as large over popular cinema as Steven Spielberg. The top-grossing director of all time, his career includes era-defining works such as Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, the Indiana Jones franchise, and Jurassic Park. Beyond box-office success, Spielberg is also a three-time Academy Award® winner, earning Oscars® for Best Director and Best Picture for Schindler’s List—which won seven Academy Awards®—and Best Director for Saving Private Ryan.

His most recent film, The Fabelmans (2022), was released by Universal Pictures and received seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Actress.

With Disclosure Day, Spielberg returns to the thriller genre with a timely, provocative concept that reflects both his fascination with humanity’s place in the universe and his unmatched ability to blend spectacle with emotional depth.

Explaining the Ending of MULHOLLAND DRIVE

David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive remains one of the most haunting and enigmatic films ever made. It operates like a riddle that refuses to be solved, luring the viewer into a world where time, memory, and identity dissolve into one another. What begins as a mysterious, almost whimsical Hollywood fairy tale gradually transforms into a psychological nightmare. By the end, it’s clear that what we’ve been watching is not a mystery to be unraveled but an emotional landscape, the mind of a woman caught between fantasy and despair. The film tells the story of two women, Betty Elms and Rita, whose lives intertwine after Rita survives a car crash and loses her memory. Betty, a bright and optimistic aspiring actress freshly arrived in Los Angeles, takes her in. Together, they embark on an investigation into Rita’s identity, which unfolds like a noir detective story bathed in dreamlike light. Everything about this world feels heightened: Betty’s charm, the coincidence of events, and the ease with w...

LOCKED follows Eddie (Bill SkarsgÄrd), a desperate man who breaks into a seemingly empty luxury SUV, only to find himself ensnared in a meticulously crafted trap. His captor? William (Anthony Hopkins), a vigilante with a twisted sense of justice. What starts as a simple break-in quickly spirals into a nightmare, as Eddie struggles to escape a vehicle designed to be his prison. With no way out and an unseen force pulling the strings, survival becomes a race against time in a ride where justice is anything but blind. This 95-minute thrill ride promises to keep audiences on edge by blending elements of survival horror and psychological warfare. Its confined setting turns an everyday luxury vehicle into an inescapable nightmare, and the ride explores themes of morality, punishment, and the true cost of justice. Only in Theaters on March 21. I love a limited-setting horror thriller. With limited settings, the film must rely more on character interactions and internal conflicts to create ten...
