The grit of the 1990s East Bay punk scene is more than just a backdrop in the upcoming project inspired by Rancid’s seminal album, And Out Comes the Wolf. Big Newport Studios and Z2 have officially joined forces to expand this world through a companion graphic novel that serves as a visceral extension of the feature film. Adapted by artist and writer Kevin Mellon from a script by Danny Peykoff and the Neese Brothers, the narrative explores the desperate intersection of poverty, drugs, and the raw ambition to escape a decaying city. It is a story rooted in the tension between dreams and a violent reality, centered on two friends navigating a landscape filled with predators while facing the haunting question of who survives when the wolf finally arrives.
For creators Jason and Jamie Neese, the transition from film to the printed page is a full-circle moment. Jamie Neese noted that comics were his original gateway into cinema, making this partnership with Z2 a natural evolution for a story built on the foundation of punk, ska, and rock. The project aims to capture a specific emotional frequency that resonates with fans who feel music in their bones. Z2 President Josh Bernstein echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that partnering with Big Newport to build a graphic novel universe around one of the greatest punk albums ever made is a genuine honor, positioning the work to be both culturally sharp and commercially explosive.
The release itself is designed with the collector in mind, particularly through the Deluxe editions that mirror the 12” x 12” format of a classic vinyl record. These high-end versions include a variety of immersive extras such as an official flash sheet tattoo by the legend Beatleguese and an Anarchy ski-cap inspired by the film’s main character, Brixton. Fans will also find art prints featuring the work of Travis Knight, Felipe Sobreiro, and Dan Mumford, who provided a brand-new exclusive cover for the series. This attention to detail ensures that the physical book feels as much like a piece of punk history as the music that inspired it.
Fans eager to get an early look at the project can find the writers and producers of the film at the San Diego Comic Con International from July 23 through the 27 in 2026. While the 100-page graphic novel and its various deluxe bundles are available for pre-order exclusively through the Z2 website, a standard edition will also make its way to major retailers and independent comic shops worldwide this fall. Whether through the screen or the page, this collaboration marks a new frontier for a story that has been decades in the making, finally giving a narrative voice to the echoes of the East Bay.
