Film enthusiasts and physical media collectors have a massive reason to celebrate this summer. As part of their landmark 20th Anniversary celebrations, Visions Home Video has announced the highly anticipated release of James Gunn’s directorial debut, Slither, on a special limited edition 4K UHD and Blu-ray Steelbook combo. Arriving on June 1st, this release marks the first time the gooey, hilarious, and terrifying masterpiece has been available in 4K resolution.
Slither is, quite simply, one of the most entertaining horror comedies ever put to film. It manages a perfect tonal tightrope walk, delivering genuine "creature feature" chills alongside a razor-sharp wit that has become James Gunn’s signature. In a year filled with blockbuster sequels, this boutique restoration feels like one of 2024’s most exciting releases. It is a reminder of a time when high-concept practical effects and character-driven horror reigned supreme.
The film stars the ever-charismatic Nathan Fillion as the town sheriff and Elizabeth Banks as a woman fighting for survival against an extraterrestrial parasite. Michael Rooker rounds out the stellar cast, delivering a performance that is as grotesque as it is strangely tragic. Before Gunn took the reins of the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy or stepped into his current role as Co-Chairman and CEO of DC Studios, he crafted this love letter to B-movies, and it remains some of his finest work.
This new edition is a significant technical upgrade. The film has been restored from the 35mm Interpositive, with the process overseen and approved by both James Gunn and Director of Photography Gregory Middleton. The 4K presentation features Dolby Vision, ensuring that the film’s vibrant, slime-covered palette looks better than it ever has in the two decades since its debut.
The physical package is equally impressive. The UK exclusive Steelbook features striking artwork by artist Chris Malbon and includes a collectible poster. Visions Home Video has also packed the disc with brand new supplemental material, including fresh interviews with Gregory Middleton, editor John Axelrad, special make-up effects designer Todd Masters, and composer Tyler Bates.
Given the cult status of the film and the limited nature of this run, this thing will move fast. The set is currently available for pre-order through HMV, Zavvi, and Amazon. For those who cannot wait until June, the film is also enjoying a limited run in select cinemas and is available on digital platforms.
Whether you are a long-time fan or a newcomer looking to see where one of modern cinema's biggest directors got his start, this Slither 4K release is an essential addition to any shelf. It is a glorious, disgusting, and wildly fun celebration of a modern classic.
