Hollywood on the Susquehanna: River Valley Film Festival Returns to Williamsport with Expanded 2026 Lineup
The independent film scene is finding a vibrant home in the heart of Pennsylvania as the River Valley Film Festival prepares for its second annual event. Running from July 17 to July 19, 2026, the festival will take over the AMC CLASSIC Williamsport 11 in downtown Williamsport. Presented by Lycoming Arts, this year's gathering builds heavily on the momentum of its 2025 debut. The program has expanded significantly, featuring 36 official selections that span narratives, documentaries, feature-length films, shorts, and music videos. This growth reinforces the festival's emerging reputation as a vital destination for independent storytellers who want to find real connections with enthusiastic audiences.
Festivities will officially begin on July 17 with Red Carpet Friday, a lively street festival running from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Inspired by the popular First Friday events hosted by Lycoming Arts, this opening celebration will bring local vendors, live music, food, and a literal red carpet experience to the downtown streets. Organizers view the event as a perfect way to blend Hollywood glamour with local community charm, welcoming out-of-town filmmakers and residents alike before the theater doors even open.
Once the outdoor party wraps up, the cinematic program kicks off with a documentary double feature deeply rooted in Pennsylvania history. The first film, a feature documentary titled Il Mio Posto a Tavola (My Place at the Table), follows Reading-based filmmaker Santo D. Marabella as he explores his personal identity and the history of the "Baby Scoop Era" as an Italian-born adoptee. Screening alongside it is The Dying Business, a short documentary by director Joe Duca that focuses on a generational, Italian-American family funeral home in Johnstown. Together, these films use regional stories to address universal themes of family, legacy, loss, and belonging.
Community integration is a major point of pride for the festival organizers. Noah Beiter, representing Lycoming Arts and the Wild Valleys Film Office, emphasizes that Williamsport's unique character shapes the entire filmmaker experience. He notes that the community truly opens its doors, ensuring that visiting artists do not get lost in the shuffle of a massive festival. Instead, filmmakers become part of a local history that already includes historic lumber barons, the Little League World Series, and even historical cinematic trivia like Gene Kelly filming a naval training video in the area.
The rest of the weekend's lineup promises plenty of variety, including the introduction of late-night screenings and industry panels. A major highlight is the PA Narrative Shorts block, which is dedicated entirely to projects filmed in Pennsylvania or created by local filmmakers, allowing audiences to see familiar communities and landscapes reflected on the big screen. The festival will also hand out competitive jury awards for best features and shorts across both narrative and documentary categories. Attendees will also have a voice through audience awards, including the distinctive Millionaire Award for the overall crowd favorite, which nods directly to the historic wealth of Williamsport's past.
The festival's strong start is rooted in a foundation that dates back to 2019, when Williamsport native and film publicist Cory Baney first envisioned the project. Although pandemic delays pushed the initial launch to July 2025, that inaugural event successfully brought 20 films from four countries to the region. It also established a high-caliber jury tradition, drawing on the expertise of industry professionals like Academy Award-winning Williamsport native Tom Woodruff Jr., entertainment journalists Ethan Alter and Megan McLachlan, cartoonist Emily Flake, and publishing executive John Shableski. Tickets, day passes, and full festival weekend passes for the 2026 edition are available now through FilmFreeway, with the complete screening schedule and event details hosted on the official River Valley Film Festival website.
