Following up a masterclass in claustrophobic horror like Neil Marshall's 2005 The Descent is pretty much an impossible task. The original built such a perfect pressure cooker of paranoia, grief, and creature terror that any follow-up was always going to face an uphill climb. But 2009's The Descent Part 2 , directed by The   Descent editor Jon Harris, doesn't try to reinvent the wheel. Instead, it leans into being a fast-paced, highly entertaining monster movie that doubles down on the gore and tense underground action. Taking on a sequel to Stuart Gordon’s 1985 classic was always going to be an awful, thankless job. The original Re-Animator was a complete accident of late-80s genre filmmaking: mean, insanely fast, hilarious, and dripping with enough fake blood to rust an engine block. When producer Brian Yuzna decided to direct the 1990 follow-up himself, he didn't even bother trying to copy Gordon’s tight pacing or pitch-black comedic beats.
