A Long Night at River Field: The Mortuary Assistant Heads to Shudder

If you’ve spent any time in the corner of the internet where horror gaming and jump scares collide, you likely already know the name The Mortuary Assistant. The indie hit that turned the clinical, quiet work of embalming into a gauntlet of demonic possession is finally making its jump to the silver screen. Shudder has officially announced that the film adaptation will begin streaming on March 27, 2026, bringing a whole new level of dread to the night shift. The film follows Rebecca Owens, a newly certified mortician played by Willa Holland (Arrow), as she steps into the unsettling halls of River Field Mortuary. What starts as a standard night of solitary embalming quickly spirals into a fight for her soul. Between performing gruesome tasks on the deceased and navigating sinister rituals, Rebecca has to uncover the secrets of her mentor, played by the always-excellent Paul Sparks (Boardwalk Empire), while battling her own past traumas. It’s a claustrophobic, high-stakes premise that has...

1000 Women in Horror: Donna Davies Uncovers a Century of Genre Pioneers

The history of horror is often told through a masculine lens, focused on the "Masters of Horror" and the slashers that haunt our dreams. But a new documentary directed by Donna Davies is set to shift that perspective, revealing that women haven't just been the victims on screen; they’ve been the architects behind the camera since the dawn of cinema. Timed perfectly for Women’s History Month, this groundbreaking film explores how women pioneers have revolutionized the genre from 1895 to the present day. Based on the extensive research and book by renowned film critic and author Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, the documentary promises a deep dive into the indelible mark women have left on horror's evolution. Rather than viewing women as a recent addition to the genre, the film traces a lineage of creators, directors, and actors who have been pushing boundaries for over a century. The project is helmed by Davies, a Halifax-based filmmaker who has become a definitive voice in ...

Chain Reactions Explores How The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Changed Cinema Forever

Half a century after Tobe Hooper’s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre carved its way into horror history, filmmaker Alexandre O. Philippe returns with Chain Reactions, a documentary examining the seismic cultural impact of the 1974 classic. Winner of the 2024 Venice Classics Award for Best Documentary on Cinema, Chain Reactions blends never-before-seen outtakes with fresh perspectives from five artists whose lives and careers were shaped by Hooper’s film: Patton Oswalt, Takashi Miike, Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, Stephen King, and Karyn Kusama. Through vivid memories, sensory impressions, and reflections on trauma, Philippe constructs a layered portrait of how a scrappy, low-budget horror film became a global touchstone. The documentary also pays tribute to the shifting ways audiences have experienced Texas Chain Saw—from grainy 16mm prints to battered VHS tapes to the sharpness of digital restoration—each format carrying its own haunting resonance. Critics have called the film “an exploration...

10 Horror Remakes That Got It Right: Reimagined Nightmares That Actually Worked

Horror remakes often carry a bad reputation—many are cash-grabs that dilute what made the original films memorable. This list celebrates ten horror remakes that got it right—whether through fresh storytelling, deeper character work, modernized visuals, or sheer atmospheric dread. These films prove that remakes can be more than recycled ideas; they can breathe new life into old nightmares. From psychological horror to blood-soaked reboots, these are the rare do-overs that truly deliver. 1. The Thing (1982) John Carpenter’s The Thing is a masterclass in paranoia and body horror. A remake of the 1951 sci-fi thriller, it’s darker, more nihilistic, and elevated by groundbreaking practical effects. The isolated Antarctic setting amplifies the tension as an alien shapeshifter infiltrates a research team, leading to a brutal breakdown of trust....

HOME WITH A VIEW OF THE MONSTER Is One of The Best Horror Films of The Last 10 Years

2019 Directed by : Alex Greenlee and  Todd Greenlee Written by :  Alex Greenlee and  Todd Greenlee Stars : Ellen Humphries, Sebastien Charmant,  Danielle Evon Ploeger, Jasper Hammer To me, the best horror films are ones where the scares are secondary. Films where you could excise all the guts, gore, and mayhem and still be left with a film. A story that stands on its own without leaning on jump scares to placate the audience. One of the more impactful moments in HOME WITH A VIEW OF THE MONSTER  is when a character confronts someone about babyproofing a house, that's it, not a beheading or a cat jumping out of a closet, but a moment that introduces an idea, an idea that informs not only the character who is being observed but the character who is doing the observing as well.  I won't go into the exact details of the film because one of the sheer joys of Alex and Todd Greenlee's feature-length debut is discovering how each chapter of the film inform...
